Customer Reviews

Overall:
Very good. However, it was 104 most days and didn't cool off much at night. Good home base for day trips.
Enjoyed Most:
The restaurant was excellent and the pool was wonderful. Our apartment was huge.
Enjoyed Least:
No air conditioning.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful countryside. We had our own car, so we did a lot of day trips exploring Tuscany. Florence was only about 30 minutes away.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You could walk to Montagnana but we had a car and it was too hot to walk. The next closest town is Montespertoli. We enjoyed exploring both.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring a cutting board and good slicing knife. You'll need it for the yummy cantaloupe and fresh tomatoes. Go to the Coop Grocery store and get some prosciutto to serve with the cantaloupe and some fresh mozzarella and basil for a quick Caprese Salad. However, that was usually lunch. We ate out all nights but one and we loved Il Focolare in Montagnana. The outside patio at the back was beautiful and the food was excellent. We also loved a place in Montespertoli that Stephani from the castle office recommended. It was something like "artistvino". Not the best atmosphere, but outstanding food. And don't forget the restaurant at the castle was very good as well. The one other thing you need to bring is a book light because there's not much lighting. Oh, and don't forget the OFF! The mosquitos feast at night because you need to keep the windows open.
Directions:
We used our GPS. Download Italy before you leave and you'll not have a problem. My husband drove like a local. And we never got lost once.
Check In Out:
No problems. And our room was not to be available until 5pm but we arrived at 3pm and got checked in immediately.

Overall:
The castle is a situated in a breathtakingly beautiful area.It was a charming 2 weeks. Friendly, helpful staff and a great pool.
Enjoyed Most:
The views and the gardens.
Enjoyed Least:
The carpet in our kitchen and bedroom were not clean and in our one bathroom the sink didn't drain. Also, no screens or AC so we got many mosquito bites. Lastly, our suite was right above the restaurant so noisy late into the night.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful towns a close drive away amazing countryside.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano and Montagna both within walking distance
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring/buy mosquito repellent, pool towels, salt and pepper.
Directions:
Perfect instructions!

Overall:
The castle was marvelous. The rooms and grounds were well kept and the scenery was beautiful. The staff was available and always accommodating.
Enjoyed Most:
Right when we arrived a man came out to meet us at our car. He had us pull up to the castle and proceeded to help us with all of our luggage. He was accommodating the entire stay with extra towels, helping with luggage, etc.
Enjoyed Least:
Definitely mosquitoes so close your windows at night. No restaurants seemed open in any of the small surrounding towns past 8:00pm.
Surrounding Area:
The overall landscape was beautiful, small towns were nice and it was easy to get to Florence, Pisa and Siena.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was Baccaiano. It was about a 15 minute walk.
Directions:
We used a GPS for our entire trip and it was money well spent!
Check In Out:
Simple.

Kristina, October

Overall:
It was very enjoyable. It was wonderful to wake up and look out the window and see the beautiful countryside.
Enjoyed Most:
The spacious rooms.
Enjoyed Least:
There was only one table fan for the whole apartment. We did not get a second fan until the last night.
Surrounding Area:
It was as easy drive to Florence, Greve and San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The closest town was about a mile away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely bring bug spray or make it your first purchase at the Coop supermarket. There was a great place in Greve that was recommended by the wine hostess at Castello Vicchiomaggio. I can't remember the name but it was right as you entered the town next to the bus stop and catty corner from the Coop.
Directions:
We had a Tom Tom GPS device which was a godsend for getting around. It sure beat trying to read a map.

Patricia, July

Overall:
We had a wonderful time at the castle. The people in the reception were friendly and helpful. There was Internet access in the reception too. Just remember that siesta is in the afternoon and lots of places close.
Enjoyed Most:
The beauty of the surrounding area was amazing. The pool was enjoyed by everyone as it was so hot. Meeting up with other families worked out great as we have four children.
Enjoyed Least:
The road behind the castle was loud especially early morning. We were there during a heatwave and the room windows needed to be open which meant many mosquitoes.
Surrounding Area:
The close proximity to Florence Pisa and San Gimignano was great. The fields of grapevines, olive groves and sunflowers added to the romantic image of Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was Baccaiano down the Hill and Montagnana up the hill both in walking distance. But Montespertoli about 5k away was the best for food. The COOP had a deli to die for.
Tips or Restaurants:
We found the property to have most things we needed. We did have to buy dish washing soap and paper towels. I also picked up some herbs from the COOP. A small restaurant in Montespertoli on the square. I think it was called the four dwarfs? was amazing. The prices were good and the food delicious. My son said the pizza was the best he had in Italy.

Enjoyed Most:
The views were breathtaking, the grounds were beautiful, and the bedrooms made us truly feel like royalty! It was perfect. So perfect that my boyfriend proposed in the olive grove.... We will definitely be back!
Enjoyed Least:
Nothing
Surrounding Area:
Tuscany must be seen to be believed. The castle provided the perfect point from which to explore Florence as well the many surrounding hill towns, castles, and vineyards. The weather was perfect and the pool made for a great treat when we returned from sightseeing.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano is just down the hill. My father walked to the shop there a few times- it's down quite a steep hill, but made for good exercise.
Tips or Restaurants:
We ate at the restaurant of the castle one night and cooked in the apartment the other nights- all was excellent!

Overall:
We will go back as often as we can. In 4 years, all of the people we made friends with are meeting for Maurice's 40th birthday! If you want a REAL taste of Tuscany, yet be able to go to go to Florence, Siena, etc. the bus stops at the castle and you can get into Florence by bus in 40 min. Or most people drive, and do day trips. The driving is much better in Tuscany,
Enjoyed Most:
EVERYTHING! After a hectic week in Rome, we were soooo ready for some peace and quiet. From the minute we walked into the apartment we knew it was a very special place. The views are amazing, just like all the pictures you see about Tuscany. The apartment was clean, spacious, and very quiet.
Enjoyed Least:
The only thing we can think of is that we REALLY wish they would supply a regular coffee maker.
Surrounding Area:
Breathtaking views, beautiful grounds, 2 small villages within walking distance. Two wineries right up the road.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaino is down the hill. A really good workout climbing back up to the castle. We recommend going to the right, up a smaller hill into another little village. Both were really very nice, and the people were very kind and patient.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant at the castle is very good. Just so you know, you do not have to have the full meal, they offer pizza and pasta, also. We cooked in the apartment most nights. We met the MOST wonderful 3 couples there and we all became fast friends. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of our lives! On the night the restaurant was closed we did a potluck, and we all brought something different. It was the best meal we had the whole time we were in Italy!
Directions:
We took a taxi as we did not rent a car.

Barbara, October

Enjoyed Most:
Proximity to Florence and the great views. The staff was very helpful.
Enjoyed Least:
No screens in windows, which meant mosquitoes.
Surrounding Area:
Quiet, country setting.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Montespertoli is 1/2km away
Tips or Restaurants:
Bug spray is a must in the summer.

William , August

Overall:
The good far outweighed any inconveniences, and we will always remember our days in the Castle.!!
Enjoyed Most:
Thanks for the reminder - it has taken us a week to catch up and deal with Jet Lag. We loved the Castle, the surrounding area, and the location to Florence. 1. The people who work at the Castle are very helpful and knowledgeable. 2. We loved being able to wash our clothes. 3. The views were magnificent and the weather perfect.
Enjoyed Least:
We had a chance to see another apartment in the Castle which we thought was nicer than ours. Our carpet needed cleaning and the lighting was poor. Hard to see in the evening. Not sure about the other apartmens. Maid service is extra so no one comes into the apartment during the week -- i.e....no new towels. We never ate in the restaurant at the castle- a bit expensive for the 4 of us and the kids are veggetarians, so the menu was not appealing to them.
Surrounding Area:
One of the receptionist's has a brother who is a potter-painter. We went to his shop about 10 minutes from the Castle and picked up some gifts and some things for ourselves. We stayed there for over an hour talking to him.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We loved the town Baccaiano, just below the Castle. Michael and I would take a walk every morning, get a cappuccino - then go to the bakery and visit with the women there, who would feed us wonderful sweets. We always walked away with a huge bag to bring back to the kids. Then on to the grocer, where we would pick up food for a picnic lunch: fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, a bottle of wine, fruit, olives, grilled eggplant and a new cheese every day. We love Pecorino Romano at room temp in a salad! We went to a new coffee bar every morning. There are 5 or 6 just in the tiny town of Baccaiano.
Tips or Restaurants:
When people go they must be prepared to purchase paper towels, napkins, dish washing liquid. The first night we washed dishes with bath soap! There is a 150 Euro deposit at registration and a mandatory 50 Euro cleaning fee at check out.

Enjoyed Most:
Great castle with a friendly and helpful staff! Take the pottery tour the castle organizes on Friday afternoon. Fun, interesting experience!<
Enjoyed Least:
The bed in the back bedroom needed to be replaced.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to many of the must-see sights of Tuscany!
Nearby Events or Locales:
Close to two small towns, but not much happening in either town in the evenings. Plus the castle is off a curvy hillside road, so I wouldn't suggest walking when it is dark outside.

Donna, October

Overall:
Gorgeous!
Enjoyed Most:
So well kept.
Enjoyed Least:
No real play area for small children.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to everything.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bacciano...yes.
Tips or Restaurants:
Relax amd enjoy your suuroundings.

Craig, May

Overall:
We look forward to our next visit and have told some many people about your company, Rentvillas, and the castle, I hope they decide to stay there, because it truly is a classic Italian experience.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything! We loved the location, loved having a concierge on site, loved having a restaurant on site if we were too tired to cook or go out, loved the history of the castle, loved staying in a castle, loved the view, loved the rooms and the furniture, loved the proximity of the bus to Firenze, and loved the local grocery store.
Enjoyed Least:
As is true in so many places, especially old castles in Europe, we could have used brighter lights in the rooms.
Surrounding Area:
Everything! Firstly, the cycling opportunities right out the front door. The views were spectacular, especially of the snow-capped mountains, the hillsides with vines and olive groves, the local winery and olive press, the neighboring castles which my nephew plotted to lay siege to, and just the stunning Tuscan countryside.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We walked and cycled many miles a day but to be honest, we drove to both nearby towns. I think they would have been long walks for grocery shopping.
Tips or Restaurants:
We enjoyed the local restaurants, there are some really fine dining opportunities in the surrounding area, but we decided that we enjoyed cooking together and so loved the shopping and meeting our local grocer-friend-language instructor, combined with the low price of a bottle of local wine. We spent our evenings, leisurely eating great antipasti, pasta, dolce, and drinking.

Judy, April

Overall:
The castle was stunning. The countryside was beautiful. It's an easy ride to Florence, Siena and Lucca. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Enjoyed Most:

Living in a Tuscan castle for a week.
Enjoyed Least:

The bedrooms were adjoining so there was not much privacy. You needed to walk through them to get to bathroom.
Surrounding Area:

Many vineyards and beautiful towns to explore.

August

Overall:
It was wonderful! All that we could have expected.
Enjoyed Most:
The location. It was such a beautiful place and so much ambiance.
Enjoyed Least:
The rooms were cold. For what we did there, get married, it was perfect
Surrounding Area:
The views and the people.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Paolo, from the pizzeria "Da Paolo" in Baccaiano and his wife were wonderful. The guy from the AGIP, Daniele was very kind to give us a ride to Montegufoni when our car broke down.
Tips or Restaurants:
We ate almost every night at "Da Paolo" and whenever we didn't, we found it wasn't as good! We received the little white book about how to do Italy "Italian Style". It was very helpful but one thing missing from the packing list was dishwashing soap.

December

Enjoyed Most:
Location was a great base for day trips throughout Tuscany, the views were superb; the fact that it was a castle, the kids were thrilled; a very helpful english-speaking staff.
Enjoyed Least:
The pool was a little crowded with European families who used the castle as a vacation resort, but our kids enjoyed playing with kids from so many different countries (France, England, Belgium, Italy, Germany..)
Surrounding Area:
Day trips to Vinci and Collodi (both off of the beaten path); proximity to Via Chiantignana (vineyards); public bus into Florence stopped right at castle; even Siena and San Gimignano were easy day trips to the south.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Leonardo da Vinci museum in Vinci was facinating.
Tips or Restaurants:
La Staccio in Montespeitoli was a lovely restaurant.

October

Overall:
The castle was great and very convenient to all the major sites in Tuscany. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed the serene and beautiful countryside. The kids loved the pool!
Enjoyed Most:
Being in a very old and well kept castle in the magnificent Florentine Hills.
Enjoyed Least:
The apartment was directly above the tavern which became very noisy late at night.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed seeing the hill towns throughout Tuscany. Volterra is our favorite small hill town.
Nearby Events or Locales:
There was a festival at a nearby town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Do your homework online, but this property is a special find!!!

July

Overall:
My initial reaction was surprise and excitement. It truly was what I had envisioned. Grounds keeper was very helpful one night when I needed to use the phone to solve a car problem. He called for me.
Enjoyed Most:
The exterior and grounds, along with view from our apartment.
Enjoyed Least:
Service hours were poor. We had scheduled an appointment to use the laundry room and no one was around to let us in. We had a problem three times with toilet not flushing.
Surrounding Area:
The countryside is magnificent, stores were close by and the people friendly.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Tuscan countryside is very accessable from here.
Tips or Restaurants:
Have owners buy a new iron and ironing board.
