About The Experience

Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This accommodation in a Tuscany villa has it all, from a swimming pool to sprawling grounds and all the amenities indoors. One of the owners, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished this holiday villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax! Lounge at this Tuscany vacation villa, take a refreshing bike ride to nearby Certaldo (we highly recommend exploring the Pretorio Palace), or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another villa, Villa Certaldo, and an apartment, La Solaia, right next door.

Location Description

The property is located four kilometers from Certaldo, which has all the necessities combined with small-town charm. Pick up groceries or eat out in the modern section and spend the rest of your day exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village. In July, you may find yourself in the midst of a lively Renaissance festival, complete with street artists, actors, musicians, and more. And don't forget to get your fill of medieval architecture! You can explore the Pretorio Palace or marvel at the profile Certaldo castle cuts across the sky. Like museums? Visit the house of Giovanni Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Day trips can take you to San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. Pisa and Florence airports are easy arrival points where you can rent a car.

Exterior Description
(500 m2/5,382 ft2)

This independent villa is situated on a private estate that consists of the owner's residence, another villa (Villa Certaldo) and an apartment (La Solaia), both for rent. This villa is nestled into the side of a hill leading up to the main villa, which sits on the crest of the hill. The outdoor areas are on different levels and separated by a fence, so remain very private. A gravel parking area is conveniently located a few meters from the front entrance, separated by a plot of grass. Views from the house are directed away from the other residences, making this villa private with its own fenced garden. There is an enormous fig tree adjacent to the backyard fence that overlooks the valley. At the front of the house on the ground floor there is a spacious covered terrace with a table and chairs for outdoor dining. A pathway from the terrace leads to the villa's own private swimming pool (open from mid May to mid September 9m x 4m, 1.1m deep). The property is accessed via a gate off of a paved, very lightly traveled country road. The surrounding estate includes a 74-acre nature reserve, populated with wild pheasant, hare, wild boar, hedgehogs, and newly-sited roe deer.

Interior Description
(110 m2/1,184 ft2)

Ground Floor: A path from the parking area leads onto the sidewalk of the front yard of the home, providing same level access to the front door. There is then a staircase that leads up to the first floor on the right. A guest bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower is located just on the left. The foyer leads directly into the 22 m2 living room, where there are two sofas (one is a sofa bed suitable for one, with a 120 cm mattress), an easy chair, fireplace, and a safe behind a portrait on the wall! There is also a large flat screen TV with satellite, a DVD player, and a small laptop computer. The entire house and garden offers wireless internet connection free of charge. The living room, as well as the rest of the house, is decorated throughout with an equestrian theme. An arched doorway leads into the 10 m2 kitchen, equipped with a cook-top, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, American and espresso coffee makers, and a dining table seating four to six. There are settings for 12, along with children's plates and utensils. Large double arched glass doors from the kitchen and living room lead out onto the 13 m2 covered terrace, overlooking the countryside and furnished with a table and chairs for dining. Several steps from the terrace lead down to the swimming pool. The ground floor also has one 10 m2 bedroom with a 160 cm queen-size bed and an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower.

First Floor: Twelve sandstone stairs lead from the foyer to the first floor. The landing has a laundry area with a washer and dryer as well as a sink and iron with ironing board. There are two more bedrooms on this floor. The first 14 m2 bedroom has a 160 cm queen-size bed, a writing desk, and a large window that overlooks the valley. The ensuite bathroom has a sink, toilet, and bathtub with handheld showerhead and skylight. The second 20 m2 bedroom has an extra-long large queen-size bed (175 cm wide x 205 cm long) along with a writing desk and three windows overlooking the valley and garden/swimming pool. Beautiful views of the countryside. Very Tuscan rural villa. Quiet and restful place.
Enjoyed Most:
The view.
Enjoyed Least:
The pool area. No mattress on the plastic sun loungers. The grass around the pool was not mowed. No kettle. Just a coffee machine. Should be specified so we could bring a travel one.
Surrounding Area:
Villa very well situated to explore Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo Alto.
Tips or Restaurants:
Kettle and mosquito repellant.

Wonderful, relaxing time in a beautiful home, in a beautiful setting. Truly a home away from home.
Enjoyed Most:
Loved the rustic Tuscan style and decor, and the setting was pristine and rural. Even the bed was comfortable!
Enjoyed Least:
Unfortunately, the clothes dryer was having issues the entire time we were there, which impacted the amount of laundry we and our friends had hoped to do there. It kept giving the message that the filter was clogged, even when it wasn't.
Surrounding Area:
We stayed here to be in striking distance of many of the small, ancient, hilltop villages in Tuscany, and we were not disappointed. Each day of our seven-day stay we struck out in our car in a different direction for a new adventure. It was so wonderful to come "home" to the same comfortable place each night for a relaxing evening. The Tuscan countryside is absolutely beautiful picturesque and memorable.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sciano was the nearest town, yes, it was within a (long) walking distance, although we didn't walk there. We only drove there one night, to the pizzeria (which was fantastic!). There wasn't much else to see or do in Sciano. Certaldo, however, is a little bit larger town, but a bit farther away, and definitely worth the trip. Don't miss the old portion of the city!
Tips or Restaurants:
The closest restaurant, a pizzeria, is just a few miles away, in Sciano, and it was wonderful! It was such a surprise to find such a terrific restaurant out in the middle of nowhere, and also to find out that it is so busy! It was packed the night we went there, and since we had no reservations, we had to wait a few minutes to be seated! We had read the earlier reviews about this villa from previous renters, and were thus forewarned of a few things we needed to bring, so I concur with the following: zip-lock food storage bags (all sizes), matches, laundry soap and dryer sheets, sugar for coffee, paper towels, bathroom and kitchen hand soap. We shopped for groceries a few times while we were there so we eventually wound up with everything we needed that we may not have brought, but generally speaking, the villa was completely livable when we arrived the things we bought were mostly personal preference.
We attempted to use a combination of GPS and the directions that were We managed to navigate with GPS all the way to the little town of Sciano, but it didn't recognize the address on our rental agreement, so we had to call the owner to meet us at the pizzeria and escort us the last mile or two. It worked out fine, however, and the owner wasn't at all annoyed that she had to come and get us, thankfully.

Very comfortable, very beautiful, very interesting.
Enjoyed Most:
The privacy, the views of the Tuscan countryside, the pool. The house is thoughtfully furnished for every comfort.
Enjoyed Least:
The kitchen is a little small, but it was not a problem for us, as we ate breakfast and lunch on the porch.
Surrounding Area:
Close enough to San Gimignano, Volterra, and Siena for excursions. Certaldo itself is a pleasant town and the old city at the top, Certaldo Alto, is lovely and uncrowded. Many good restaurants in the area.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo, but you wouldn't want to walk there. There are many quiet country roads for hiking.
We put the map coordinates that were supplied into the GPS. Also, my husband studied the written directions ahead of time, comparing them with the map on Google Earth, so we had no trouble.
Check In Out:
Check-in and check-out were easy.
