About The Experience
You’ll be steeped in history during your stay in this magnificent castle from the 1200s, formerly a key point in defense network of Gubbio against rival towns currently owned by descendants of Napoleon Bonaparte. After a meticulous restoration, this castle has taken on a second life as a comfortable, luxurious vacation villa in Umbria. From the old watchtower, there are views of the huge, 500 hectare estate – which includes a swimming pool and rose garden - and the surrounding countryside of forests and meadows. For a large group, it’s hard to do better than this stately villa-castle.
Location Description

This villa is located in Umbria, close to the village of Carbonesca, which has a bar, trattoria, and a small grocery store. A short drive away you will find Gubbio, with its narrow cobble streets. The town has restaurants, shops, and most necessities. A bit farther, Umbria’s capital city, Perugia, features a rich and long history that is evident when gazing up at the ancient ruins and buildings that include old churches and cathedrals. The Piazza IV Novembre, which is the heart of the city, is where locals and tourists like to gather. Any visit to Perugia should include a stroll along the Corso Vannucci for your evening passeggiata (stroll). Should you be traveling in October, attending the annual Perugia Chocolate Festival is a must. The town transforms into an open-air pastry shop where you can find anything chocolate-related. There are also cooking classes, exhibitions, and plenty of tasting opportunities. Lake Trasimeno, one of the largest lakes in Italy, also makes a unique day trip. The towns around the lake have a multitude of castles – there are even some in the lake itself, on its three islands. From Perugia, there are frequent train connections to Florence, Rome, and Pisa.

It was a very unique experience to have the opportunity to stay at a castle and explore the grounds.
Enjoyed Most:
My favorite parts were the historical value and the pool.
Surrounding Area:
I enjoyed the picturesque rolling hills.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Carbonesca. No it was not, but that was OK
Tips or Restaurants:
Don't forget to bring wine and food for breakfast. Restaurant Recommendations: the St. Angelo agriturismo.
It's the town after Castello Castaldi when you get off the main highway.

Marianne, July

Enjoyed Most:
The unique character of the property.
Enjoyed Least:
The dusty road to the property.
Surrounding Area:
The agrarian vistas.
Nearby Events or Locales: would be a long walk.
Tips or Restaurants:
Shopping at the market in Carbonesca is a joy.
GPS did not work.

Charles, July

We had an amazing trip of a lifetime at Castle Ducale. It was comfortable, luxurious, restful and an amazing opportunity to reconnect with family in a unique, unblemished breathtaking setting.
Enjoyed Most:
The gorgeous pool was big enough for everyone, and well-stocked with comfortable seating and a pristine bathhousetoilet. We spent full days at the pool under beautiful trees with gorgeous Umbrian mountains in the distance!
Enjoyed Least:
We stayed upstairs in the guesthouse and would have loved more lighting!
Surrounding Area:
The natural beauty was breathtaking, and it was so enjoyable to see small-town Italy.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Casacastalda is not within walking distance, but we did attend a beautiful Mass there.
Tips or Restaurants:
The Castle provided everything we needed! We felt very taken care of!
Despite purchasing Italy maps from our GPS provider, our GPS unit still did not show good directions to the castle. The directions provided described driving through town and coming upon a football field and green gate. Please indicate that the gate is before the football field, at least when coming from Casacastalda!
