About The Experience

Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This newly refurbished accommodation (all on one level!) in a Tuscany villa has it all! The owner, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished the villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax or dine on the covered terrace, hike through the woods across the country lane, explore Certaldo Alto with its Pretorio Palace, or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another large apartment on the lower level, as well as Villa Sella, right next door (with its own pool), and Villa Certaldo, near the owner’s villa.

Location Description

The property is located four kilometers from Certaldo, which has all the necessities combined with small-town charm. Pick up groceries or eat out in the modern section and spend the rest of your day exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village. In July, you may find yourself in the midst of a lively Renaissance festival, complete with street artists, actors, musicians, and more. And don't forget to get your fill of medieval architecture! You can explore the Pretorio Palace or marvel at the profile Certaldo castle cuts across the sky. Like museums? Visit the house of Giovanni Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Day trips can take you to San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. Pisa and Florence airports are easy arrival points where you can rent a car.

Nearby Attractions: Horseback riding 6 km, tennis 4 km, vineyards everywhere; nearest wine tasting 3 km.

Exterior Description

The home comprises the upper level of a newly renovated canteen constructed in 1939 by the grandmother of the current owner of the estate. The building was used for wine production for only a few years until the breakout of WWII at which time it served as a safe hiding place for those desperately attempting to avoid capture by the Nazi forces. There is still a hand dug WWII hideout located approximately 30 yards from La Solaia. The home is located on the same estate as Villa Sella and Villa Certaldo, therefore comprises the same property description (animal reserve, cultivated acreage) as these two properties. The structure contains two rental properties, each identical in size and layout. La Solaia is on the upper level; however, its entrance is ground level since it nestles against the hillside. There are no stairs in the home, other than the single step up to enter the home from its private terrace. Thus, it is a very comfortable home for families with children or guests with mobility challenges.

The home is reached from the parking area located just a few meters from the private front yard. There is a private fenced in garden (250 sq m/2700 sq ft) in front of the home. The private covered terrace (12 sq m/130 sq ft) furnished with dining table and chairs, comprises the entrance to the home. All floor covering inside the home and the loggia are Terra Cotta brick. There is an arched shaped double door glass entrance to living room from terrace.

Interior Description

Note: All furnishings and appliances unless otherwise indicated are new (2012).

Ground Floor (All Rooms): Throughout the home the ceilings are constructed with brick inlaid on large wooden beams typical of Tuscany. The walls are white and all rooms have ceiling fans for guest comfort. The table lamps are handmade and decorated ceramic. The wall fixtures are brass. The entire home is covered with wireless internet for guest use 24/7 at no additional cost. All bathrooms are luminous and each has window openings.

Living Room, Dining Room/Kitchen: The front double door entrance leads directly to the living room (25 sq m/270 sq ft) which is comfortably furnished with two large sofas (one is a sofa bed suitable for one, with a 120 cm mattress) and easy chair offering guests a large conversational area with coffee table and flat screen satellite television entertainment. The wood burning fireplace provides a cozy atmosphere. The writing desk offers a portable internet tablet for guest use. The series of 12 hand painted lithographs depicting colorful plants and herbs brings the feel of the countryside into the home. A large arched opening joins the living room with the kitchen/dining room (25 sq m/270 sq ft). The kitchen island provides a spacious and functional food preparation space as it overlooks both the dining and living rooms. Guests have a microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, dishwasher, electric ceramic glass cook top area and electric oven as well as all standard kitchen equipment and utensils. All kitchen appliances and home accessories including pots, pans, plates, and utensils are new (2012). The open dining area offers a large table with seating for 8 persons. There is an antique “madia” or bread cabinet for storage. 10 colorful hand painted lithographs adorning the walls depict various professions from the 1600’s. The in-home laundry room (5 sq m/54 sq ft) houses the washing machine and provides a storage area. An arched corridor (5 sqm/54 sqft) with wood beamed ceiling provides entrance to the wooden double doors leading to the master suite.

First Bedroom: (19 sqm/200 sqft) is light and airy with four windows on the three outer walls overlooks the countryside and contains a queen size bed, two night tables, an armadio, and writing desk with chair. Six hand colored lithographs depict the various counties in England, and an original drawing, Milan 1845, illustrates major nations and their populations. The suite includes a private bathroom (5 sq m/54 sq ft) with double sink, WC, bidet, and shower/tub with sliding glass doors and wall mounted removable shower head.

Second Bedroom: (14 sq m/150 sq ft) has a queen size bed, two night tables, an armadio, and writing desk with chair. The room has three windows overlooking the countryside. Hand painted lithographs depicting English military adorn the room as do prints of Napoleon’s battles. The private en-suite bathroom (4 sq m/43 sq ft) has a double sink, WC, bidet, and shower/tub with glass sliding doors and wall mounted removable shower head.

Third Bedroom: (14 sq m/150 sq ft) has three windows and offers a queen size bed, two night tables, an armadio, and writing desk with chair. Original hand painted lithographs dated 1815 adorn the room as does an original topographic drawing from Sicily, 1892. The third bathroom offering double sink, WC, bidet, and shower stall with wall mounted removable shower head is conveniently located adjacent to this bedroom and is also easily accessed from the living room.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Our experience was very soul-refreshing with the family at La Solaia. We enjoyed the location and the home. The kitchen was stocked with enough basic equipment to make a meal and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Enjoyed Most:
We enjoyed the tranquility of the rural setting. It was lovely being in the country where we could see the sun rise and set each day.
Enjoyed Least:
We definitely needed a rental vehicle to stay here, both for transport for day trips and the grocery store.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed roaming through the small towns in the area. As it was the off season, we had many places to ourselves, which we loved.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo and Poggibonsi, and no, they are not within walking distance. Cars are necessary.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you come in the winter, bring slippers or thick, warm socks. The floors are very cold. There is a list of restaurants provided by the owner, which was very helpful.
Directions:
We used GPS.
Check In Out:
The process was seamless.

Overall:
We had a wonderful experience at La Solaia. Elizabeth was so gracious and greeted each one of us upon arrival. A+ hospitality!
Enjoyed Most:
The property is so peaceful and has so much history. It was so fun to explore! Not to mention, the view is unbeatable. Simply breathtaking!
Enjoyed Least:
There is nothing that particularly stood out.
Surrounding Area:
It was so easy to drive into Certaldo for dinner or to head to the train station to go to Pisa, Florence, Venice, Rome - you name it! Also, the villa is close to other hill towns such as San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo is the nearest town and I believe the heart of it is about 3.5 miles from the villa. I wouldn't recommend walking just because it can be dangerous with the cars!
Tips or Restaurants:
The villa is equipped with everything you could need. The only thing we really brought was laundry soap (pods). We loved a little family restaurant in Certaldo called La Casalinga. Our group thought it had the best limoncello.
Directions:
We used GPS. I would recommend GPS to other travelers if they have it as a resource just because the turns come up really fast. Although the directions are very detailed.
Check In Out:
Check in and check out was so easy. Elizabeth came and talked us through everything for both check in and check out!

Overall:
I had a wonderful time at the villa. It was homey. Comfortable. Everything was just lovely. The living room furniture was comfortable and inviting. The bed was just perfect. I have rarely had such restful sleep when not in my own bed ever. The kitchen is well appointed and very practically set up. It was easy to cook even though it wasn't "my" kitchen because everything seemed to be in the exact right place. No searching for things... it was almost as if I had been there before even though it was my first visit.
Enjoyed Most:
The property was beautiful. Quiet but still convenient. Close to the PAM for shopping quick drive to what turned out to be my favorite (San Gimignano). And still felt like we had all the privacy in the world. In addition, Elizabeth had a handy binder full of helpful information about the area that was helpful on many occasions.
Enjoyed Least:
I had to really search for something to dislike, so please know this is splitting hairs! LOL but if I have to pick something, I would say that i like a big tub and the bathroom for "my" bedroom had just a shower. (But the water in the shower was always nice and hot and the showers were fabulous!)
Surrounding Area:
Everything. It was quaint, friendly, beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
I was not a driver on this vacation and am a terrible judge, but I would say either Certaldo Alto or Sam Gimignano. They are not within walking distance but were just a short drive away and well worth it.
Tips or Restaurants:
In San Gimignano, you HAVE to get pizza from Pizza Ricci and up a short hill for the BEST gelato in the world! We went back for pizza and gelato FOUR TIMES!! (Plus one to-go order from some of my travel mates who went without me!)
Directions:
I would definitely get GPS. I didn't drive but we used it for every trip. The directions from Elizabeth, to get from the car rental place to the villas were spot on.
Check In Out:
So easy! It was as near perfect a vacation as I have ever had.
