About The Experience
Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This newly refurbished accommodation (all on one level!) in a Tuscany villa has it all! The owner, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished the villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax or dine on the covered terrace, hike through the woods across the country lane, explore Certaldo Alto with its Pretorio Palace, or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another large apartment on the lower level, as well as Villa Sella, right next door (with its own pool), and Villa Certaldo, near the owner’s villa.
Location Description

The property is located four kilometers from Certaldo, which has all the necessities combined with small-town charm. Pick up groceries or eat out in the modern section and spend the rest of your day exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village. In July, you may find yourself in the midst of a lively Renaissance festival, complete with street artists, actors, musicians, and more. And don't forget to get your fill of medieval architecture! You can explore the Pretorio Palace or marvel at the profile Certaldo castle cuts across the sky. Like museums? Visit the house of Giovanni Boccaccio (author of the Decameron). Day trips can take you to San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. Pisa and Florence airports are easy arrival points where you can rent a car.

Exterior Description
The home comprises the ground level of a newly renovated canteen, originally constructed in 1939 by the grandmother of the current owner of the estate. The building was used for wine production for only a few years until the breakout of WWII at which time it served as a safe hiding place for those desperately attempting to avoid capture by the Nazi forces. The main villa of the property lived in by the owner of the estate and his family was occupied by the Nazi Officials and used as their base for this area of Tuscany in July of 1944. The owner’s family escaped by foot, walking for more than two weeks to the property of a relative near San Gimignano. There is a hand dug WWII hideout in the hillside next to La Vinaia, as well as two other hideouts in the 25 acre nature reserve comprised in the estate property.
The home is identical in floor plan and amenities to the La Solaia, as this structure contains both rental properties, each completely independent from the other and occupying separate levels of the two story building.
The home is reached from the parking area just a few yards from the private front yard. Six steps lead to the covered porch where a terra cotta bust of the Roman Emperor Caracalla overlooks the outdoor dining area furnished with table and chairs. This loggia provides the entrance to the home from its arched double door glass entrance door.
Due to the unique construction of the building, La Vinaia is the coolest of the properties on the estate in the warm summer months of Tuscany. The underground level below the home still houses enormous wine vats and a large hand dug underground canteen (25m l x 7m w x 5m h) which was used to store the wines produced.

Overall:
We enjoyed the property. The surroundings were beautiful. The history very interesting. Our overall experience was fantastic.
Enjoyed Most:
Probably being centrally located to the places we traveled to.
Enjoyed Least:
That it wasn't in walking distance to a town. We would have loved to walk into town for a nice meal or just a cup of coffee.
Surrounding Area:
All the small hilltop towns.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No
Tips or Restaurants:
We did find a quaint little pizzeria by mistake, but couldn't tell you how to get there or even the name. It was off the beaten path by a lake with a beautiful outdoor BBQ.
Directions:
I think the directions were very involved. We used a map app. It was great.
Check In Out:
We requested to receive our refund of the security deposit early since we checked out in the wee hours to catch our flight.

Overall:
I was so happy with the villas; we also rented La Solaia, which is on the same estate. I would recommend both villas to anyone.
Enjoyed Most:
The views, the history and meeting the owners. They were both such interesting people. Their historical information about the estate made the villas even more special.
Enjoyed Least:
The distance from facilities. It really is necessary to rent a car.
Surrounding Area:
I love the ancient city of Certaldo, all of the vineyards, the weekly local markets in both certaldo and Poggibonsi and the proximity to many other great destinations.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Certaldo. No
Tips or Restaurants:
A great restaurant very close by is in Sciano and is the only pizza parlor there. Very good and very reasonably prices. Be sure you get your euros before coming to Italy. There is no place nearby in Certaldo to exchange American dollars. Learn a little Italian. It would have been a big help to know a few basic phrases.
Directions:
I did not have a rental car with a GPS, nor GPS on my cell phone. That would have been the easiest solution. I don't think there is much you can do to improve.
Check In Out:
None. It was very easy and the owners were very helpful.
